Books and Authors

30 Day Book Challenge – Day 11

Today’s Prompt: A book you hated

There were a few reasons I hated John C. Wright’s War of the Dreaming novels that began with this book.

1. Some of the characters and dialogue felt “cartoonish” to me. The back cover blurb and the cover itself made me think this was going to be a serious fantasy novel, and sometimes it is, but most of the time, I could picture it as a children’s cartoon TV show.

2. The book seemed like it was written more to display the author’s writing style than anything else. Some of the imagery was rather lovely, but the plot leaped around between the dream world and reality too many times for me to feel grounded.

3. I couldn’t sympathize with any of the characters and I didn’t really care what happened to them. Nothing about the novel gripped me, so I can honestly say that I finished it to get it over with.

In short, I’d recommend a different fantasy series.
