THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 335

Can’t Think

“What are they making
you do?” I asked.
She laughed out loud,
the deranged sound bouncing
against the neatly arranged tables and chairs.
“You don’t know?
You seriously don’t know
by now? Isn’t it obvious?”
Lindsey giggled
for a while longer
while I sat, deep in thought.
Nothing came to the surface.
I can’t think here.
The barrenness of my head
mirrored the emptiness of this school, this institution.
“Nobody can make you do anything,”
I said. My parents’ words.
One of Lindsey’s eyebrows lifted
into her bangs.
“You’re smart,” she said,
“but real naïve. They should send you
here forever, too.”
