For Show

I looked around
for the guidance counselor,
but she had disappeared.
Lindsey and I were alone
in this expansive, brilliantly clean cafeteria.
“Why did you want to see me?” I asked, sitting down.
“You proved you actually give a damn,” Lindsey said.
She sniffled. A tear?
“You know,” she continued,
“they say this place is safe, but everything’s just for show.
The metal detector
doesn’t work.
So you could
bring a gun
if you wanted.”
I rummaged in my pocket
and found the note.
“I did bring this,” I said, “from Maddy.”
Lindsey paled
and took the note.
