THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 303

Ignoring Me

We were supposed to sit
with our homeroom class
during the assembly,
but nobody listened.
They all went running off
to sit with friends, boyfriends,
or girlfriends.
I looked around for Gary.
He would have something witty
to say about this whole “plague” business.
Through the blur of colorless faces
and the forest of legs on the bleachers,
I saw him.
When I sat beside him,
he turned to me with a nod,
then turned back.
I remembered how we met.
At an assembly.
Now it was like I had never
met him at all.
I said his name.
He didn’t answer.
