I burst into the cool air
of the cafeteria,
feeling like an animal
At least he hadn’t
sent me to the principal’s office.
I had been in enough trouble
Liz still hadn’t returned
from the restroom.
Gary was still sitting with Maddy,
laughing at something she was saying.
Everything was normal.
I didn’t know why I expected it to be different.
I looked behind me,
just in case the Boogeyman
might have followed me, but he was not there.
He must have had better things to deal with
than an errant student.
I sat beside Gary and Maddy.
