My eyes adjusted to the darkness.
I searched for the sheen of metal
or a subtle smell behind the mildew
but everything
seemed innocent.
The yearbooks were still in their
stacked boxes.
Rakes for the horticulture class
leered at me from a corner.
A spider crawled
across the dusty face
of an old computer monitor.
I took in every detail.
The cobwebs,
the watering cans
in a heap beside the rakes,
the garden hose wrapped
around a ceiling beam.
I noticed a switch
on the wall and flicked it up,
but nothing happened.
