THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 290

Twisting

The widget
slid neatly
into the lock.
I twisted it,
pretending
it was a key.
I lowered my
ear to the door
and heard
a faint
clicking.
I twisted
in the other
direction,
and the widget
broke.
I stared
at the broken
paper clip
in my hand,
wishing my
gaze could put
it back together,
but that was useless and I was stuck
with a locked door, a broken widget,
and no way to get inside, unless I
somehow broke in, but the one grimy
window in the storage building
was too high and too small
to admit me.
