Another Widget

“This widget,”
said Clay, when we returned
to computer engineering class,
“is perfect for lock-picking.”
He held up his latest masterpiece.
“Put it away,” our teacher said.
Clay didn’t listen.
He hid the new widget
and the box of paper clips
in one of the drawers
on our worktable.
Later, he said to me,
“Try this widget.
It opens any lock.
Any door. A paper clip
can’t do that.
But this widget can.”
He shoved the pointy little thing
into my hand.
It looked similar to the others
he had made.
How many shapes can come
from one jumbo paper clip?
