THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 281


In the last five minutes
of my last class of the day,
I headed to the bathroom
for no reason other
than to stare at myself
in the mirror
and make sure
that zit on my face
wasn’t as big as I thought it was.
But someone else
was in the bathroom,
hidden in the last stall.
I thought I heard crying.
The stall door opened
and Lindsey stepped out.
New pink lines
etched her wrist.
“Pink isn’t your best color,”
I said, echoing something
she had once said to me.
Lindsey jumped,
a tissue falling
from her hand
to the floor.
