Everyone’s Business

I tried.
He was my boyfriend,
so I should be able
to confide in him.
I told him about
the storage building,
the key,
and Lindsey’s depression,
and I tried to articulate
why it all mattered to me.
Gary raised one eyebrow
and asked me why
I was so interested
in everyone else’s business.
Intuition told me
this was important business.
It was not just my business.
It was going to be everyone’s business.
Like most guys,
Gary did not seem to understand
the magic of intuition.
He shrugged. “Girls,” he said,
put on his crooked grin,
and wound his arm around me.
