Bus Ride

“That writing prompt,”
Gary said, “Was utterly
inane. I mean,
they actually expect us
to care about government?
We can’t even vote yet!”
The writing test
was so far from my mind
that I could only nod
in vague agreement.
The rest of my attention
was focused on craning my neck
to watch Amanda and Maddy
squeeze themselves into a seat,
pinning Lindsey between them.
She reminded me of
an old, tattered toy
in a tug-of-war
between two sisters.
Gary poked me.
“Hey. What’s the matter?”
I didn’t know how to explain
my fascination
to him.
