Writing Test

We were loaded
onto a bus
and driven to a nearby church
to take a writing test.
Why a church?
Our school is too small
for all the students
to fit in the cafeteria, gym, or auditorium
at the same time.
Perhaps our principal hoped
that God would give
us powers of
style and eloquence
in writing.
During the test,
I shook my hand free of writer’s cramp
and glanced at Lindsey.
She had slumped over her paper
like she had fallen asleep.
One of the proctors poked her,
and she jolted awake.
What is wrong with that girl?
