“Are you stalking us again?” Amanda accused,
“because that’s what you do
all the time. Stalk people and write about them,
and stick your face where it doesn’t belong.”
Her words stung me like a swarm of bees,
but they did not matter.
After a while, the swelling would go down.
“What are you doing over there?” I asked
and gestured toward the storage building.
“Why do you want to know?” Maddy
planted her hands on her hips.
“So you can go and tattle to some teacher?”
She wasn’t looking directly at me.
Her eyes shifted from side to side.
