From where I stood
behind the tree,
I could see the anger
in Maddy’s eyes.
“Left it at home?
What good is that?”
Lindsey stopped crying,
apparently relieved.
I thought she could
even be trying
to smile.
Maddy ranted on:
“That door is never locked!
Lindsey began to shuffle away,
and that was when she saw me.
She pointed an accusing finger.
“Ooh, it’s the Archivist,” said Maddy,
her anger turning to interest.
The three of them
formed a ring around me,
and a stupid chant echoed
through my head.
Ring-a-round the rosie,
a pocketful of posies…
