THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 268

Locked

before I saw her.
Her sobs echoed clear
through the grass
around the storage building.

and peered around its trunk
until I saw Maddy and Amanda
there with Lindsey.
But they were not comforting her.
“Where’s the key?” Maddy asked,
her voice as harsh as a sudden gust
of winter wind.
Amanda had taken the key
from Lindsey.

Maddy twisted the doorknob
of the storage building.
“Damn. Locked,” she said.
It wasn’t locked before.
I got in there without a key.

“I left the key at home,” Amanda said.
