THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 247

I called her name,
but she was already gone,
swallowed into the maw
of the school.
After an uneventful
geometry class,
I wandered outside
to feel the sun,
rather than
fluorescent glow,
on my skin.
My walk took me
beyond the school grounds
to the residential street
where Gary lives.
No cars were in the driveway.
The school beckoned me back.
I heard the sounds of the band
warming up for a practice session,
the ROTC leaders commanding
in a doglike bark,
shouts from the track…
and I was drawn back
into those solid brick walls
for another hour.
