A marketing firm’s representative,
her mouse-brown roots
showing under her platinum-blond
dye job, said,
“You should think
about your future
Don’t wait until senior year
to decide your college major.”
Some girls beside me whispered
while the representative spoke.
“Everyone changes their major
all the time. We’re only, like, 15.
How the hell are we supposed
to know the rest of our lives?”
The woman pointed at me.
It was as if her finger had traced
a spotlight around me.
“You,” she said.
“What are your career goals?”
Images of myself
in different roles
bounced through my head.
Nothing felt right.
