Drug Dogs
The bell rang before
he could open it.
He grinned at me again
and dashed off down the hall.
Anxiety returned, blasting
its way through my stomach.
Will he think the poem is stupid?
Will he think I’m stupid?
A slight diversion
erased my anxiety.
Drug dogs have entered
the school. Cops let
them sniff around our classroom
and our backpacks
while we all waited outside.
(The new rumor was that someone
had been dealing pot.)
Sure enough, we heard the dogs
barking from inside our classroom.
A girl in my class turned
red with shame—the culprit.
