THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 124

Irony

“Come on,” Lindsey taunted,
standing opposite me.
“Do something.
If you really love him,
you’ll fight for him.”
But I was no longer fighting
for my crush.
I wasn’t even fighting
to hurt Lindsey.
I was fighting
to make a point.
I don’t want to fight.
I let the darker part of me
take over.
My hand formed a fist.
I recalled the pain
of Lindsey’s hands jerking at my hair.
I pretended my fist
was the barbell
and I was exercising a flaccid muscle
I never used.
Courage?
Lindsey didn’t expect it.
I hardly expected it.
My fist slammed her face.
Crack.
