I watched her arms unfold
and curl into fists,
and I thought she would hit me.
I didn’t step back.
I didn’t care how many people were watching.
We were just two girls
on the lowest rung of the popularity ladder.
“Fight!” someone shrieked. “Fight!”
I turned toward the voice,
(it was Maddy),
and in the second it took me to turn,
Lindsey’s arm cocked back.
I saw her fist flying at me
from the corner of my eye.
She wore some kind of ring,
but the details were snatched away
as my crush stepped up behind her
and held her back.
