Who We Are
“What are you always hiding?” he asked,
and I didn’t get defensive.
For some reason, when he asked the question,
it didn’t seem like an insult.
So I told him about the translation,
but I was still not brave enough to let him see it.
It felt silly when I told him,
my actions reflected off someone
Gary seemed fascinated.
“So you want to be a linguist?”
“I’m only in high school. I have no idea
what I want to be.”
Gary agreed. “Yeah. It is stupid how they
always expect us to know who we are.”
