A smile appeared on Lindsey’s face.
Her eyes held no mirth.
She said my name like a curse.
She looked at my crush,
and sudden knowledge flooded over me in a torrent.
Blood drained from my face
until I was as white as the page of the book he held.
“He’s my boyfriend,” Lindsey said.
Each word was a drop of acid on my heart;
her smile was the knife cutting into the burns.
But you said he was gay…
you said he was gay…
YOU LIAR YOU LIED YOU—
My face was a white flag of surrender.
I walked away.
