THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 74

Exception

After the assembly,
Gary said goodbye.
(I wondered if we would
meet again.)
The student body
shuffled back to class,
subdued, silent, possibly thinking.
For once, I was not thinking
about any of the usual things
in my mind
(the boy, Lindsey,
grades, driver’s ed).
Instead, I remembered
that one notch in the wall
that looked like a bullet hole.
Maybe someone had
brought a gun to school
(this school!)
before.
I shrugged away the thoughts.
Just my imagination
getting ahead of me again,
making fantasy out of fact.
Violence can happen anywhere.
My school can’t be
the only exception.
