THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 28

Watching Lindsey
(when I finally find her)
is like looking into a mirror.
She’s friendless,
staring around at everyone.
Her wide rat eyes roll
like frightened, skittering marbles
as she takes in the entire
cafeteria at once.
Do I really look that way?
Is it all perception?

Lindsey’s gaze rolls to me.
I give her the tiniest, mouse-sized smile
(a sliver of cheese to the rat, I’m sure
Maddy and Amanda would say),
trying to see what is
wrong with her.
Being poor isn’t a crime.
She seems OK.
Yeah, I hear Liz in my mind,
this is coming from YOU.
