THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 24

Another Wish

The sun rose,
burnishing the back of my head
to what I hoped would be gold,
and another wish
rose inside me.
I could not put a name on it
because that would make it
disappear.
I wished for everyone here:
students in the school,
people in the town,
babies in their cradles.
A wish that we could all
do more listening
and less talking.
The world is loud enough.
Even the sun is loud somehow;
its heat is a scream.
I crinkled my eyes and turned toward it,
cringing as if afraid.
But because I was not afraid,
I made the wish.
