THE ARCHIVES: Chapter 13

They say home is a place
where you can feel welcome
all the time.
Home is also a place
where secrets are kept,
papers filed away,
drawers shut against snoops.
I try to keep my things neat,
my set of “archives” in order,
but how do you file memories?
Writing them down
after the fact
seems to remove a little of their power,
especially as pencil marks
fade on paper over time,
especially as pen marks
sometimes smear
and markers bleed through.
Typing words into a computer
drains even more power
from the memories,
and adds no permanence.
