Y is for Youth

Age is only a number. What matters is how you feel inside. You can be 84 and feel like you’re 24, and you can be 24 and feel like you’re 84. Some people are wise beyond their years, and others are kids at heart. That got me thinking about youth… and about a few songs about the freedom that brings.

1. “We are Young” – Fun

I think the band’s name is stupid, but the song is lovely. It’s a nice rock ballad in a Top 40 list filled with pop and hip-hop artists like Justin Bieber and Rihanna (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). It’s about seizing the day (or, rather, the night) and making a mark on the world… because you’re young; you have the power.

2. “Youth of the Nation” – P.O.D.

On a sadder note, this song is about the dark side of youth: the difficulties and challenges of it. It’s hard to be a teenager: to find a place in the world, to be accepted, and to grow up. Some kids never grow up; they let the difficulties get the better of them, and there was nobody to save them… or nobody who knew they needed help.

3. “Young Turks” – Rod Stewart

I hate most music from the 80s. I couldn’t really tell you why; just that it doesn’t sound good to my ear all the time. But this song is one of the rare exceptions. It’s about two teenage rebels who think they know what’s best for them… but the sad thing is, when you’re a teenager, you don’t know what’s best for you even though you think you’ve got it all figured out. Honestly, you may not even have it all figured out by the time you’re in your forties.

4. “Young, Wild & Free” – Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg

If you really think about it, this song is about how youth can go wrong, too. Yeah, you’re young, but that doesn’t mean you can go smoking blunts and drinking until the crack of dawn. Live it up, but don’t get into dangerous situations. I like this song, but I like it for the sound, not the lyrics. I think that too many kids these days might take this song too seriously when they hear it on the radio, and that’s unfortunate.

  1. I know you said you don’t like 80s music, but this is only from 1981 and it’s heart is really in the 70s 🙂
If you don’t mind me bringing an English view, Baggy Trousers is a classic British favourite about schooldays (is childhood the same as youth? discuss)

    • Ah, what a funny song. 🙂 And I’m not sure childhood is quite the same as youth… if anything, childhood is more carefree. All those hormones show up during adolescence and drive you completely insane.
