U is for Ugly

There are a lot of ugly people in the world. On the outside, they may look beautiful. They drive nice cars, they wear expensive clothes, their houses are immaculate. But on the inside, where it matters, their soul is a black pit of despair (most emo, cliched phrase I’ve used all week).

Some people are two-faced, showing one side to their friends and another side to people they don’t like as much. Some people talk nice to your face, but behind your back, they say horrible things about you. Those are some examples of ugly people… and reading this CNN article today made me think of another type of ugly person: bullies.

Middle schoolers can be cruel. I know this from personal experience. The majority of bullying I witnessed when I was younger occurred in middle school. It’s definitely not unheard of to hear about middle schoolers bullying their peers, but the middle schoolers in the article were picking on a 68-year-old woman.

They called her all kinds of names, like “fat-ass,” and “elephant” and they taunted her with death threats and comments about her deceased mother. They even made a video of it, which appeared on YouTube here.

All I can say is that people who bully others are the ugliest type of person. If each of those kids had been alone, they would not have done what they did. Peer pressure, safety in numbers… call it what you like, but most of the time, kids bully in packs. They are often more influenced by their friends than they are by their parents, teachers, and other forces of reason in their lives. The question is… will they grow out of their ugly behavior (with the help of disciplinary action) or will they continue to act like animals? Let’s hope for the former.

May bullying end.

  1. If I were to hate technology, this would be one of my prime sentiments against it: Even a mere ten years ago if you were picked on, it would happen once in time with relatively few witnesses; now if you’re picked on it can become a popular video on youtube where thousands may watch your torment at the hands of immature bullies.
