I hit 50k for NaNoWriMo yesterday afternoon, and although I’m technically “finished” with NaNo and have the required word count necessary to win, the story is nowhere near done. As of today, my stats graph looks like this:
I always plan 30 days’ worth of chapters or sections or material or however you want to say it, even though this year and last year, I hit 50k early. So the word count’s done, but the story arc is unfinished. I admit, it would be very nice to just quit in the middle of the story, since I have 50k, but I’m pretty sure the characters won’t stop until I write down everything they want to say.
By the end of the month, I may end up with well over 60k words. And it doesn’t stop there. I want the story I’m writing to continue past November, since I designed it to be more or less a soap opera. If one story line ends, there are still two or three others that are still open and need to be finished. That’s how soap operas drag on and on and on – the real challenge is coming up with enough crazy material to keep the characters, readers, and writer interested.
I’m writing this story for the pure fun and enjoyment of it. I doubt it will ever get published, not even on the Internet. For the first time in a long time I have a great set of characters that I really love writing about and that makes me happy. 🙂
