I’ve read a lot of posts about NaNoWriMo in the past couple of days. Everyone seems to be excited to start their novels next month, whether they’ve already got a bunch of ideas or whether they’re just going by the seat of their pants.
Usually, it’s something of a struggle to come up with a good idea, let alone a cast of characters to carry the plot forward. But this year, my brain seems to have put out a casting call and I’m getting tons of characters popping into my head. Since my NaNo project is going to be the start of a dramatic series with a hint of paranormal that will continue after November is over, it’s good that I’m getting lots of characters because I’m definitely going to need more when the existing ones leave or get killed off.
This is strange because characters don’t come up and announce themselves as boldly as these guys have. It’s rare that I get a name and a bit of personality this quickly. The little details I’m getting should be enough of a starting point, then I can make the rest up as I go. Because that’s what writing is all about – the joy of invention and creation just for the sheer thrill of it. It’s a NaNo story, therefore it doesn’t have to be perfect at all right now.
