Fascination with Numbers

My favorite number of all time is three. The number three has a lot of significance to it: the Holy Trinity, “the third time’s the charm,” there are three parts of a Greek ode, etc. And I was born on a 3rd. It’s just a neat number. Three is a good amount of cookies to eat. A genie will grant you three wishes if you have the good fortune to meet one.

My other favorite numbers are 7, 13, 14, 17, 20, 44, 88, 133, and the mysterious 318.

I don’t know if you have something like this, but I always seem to see the number 318 everywhere. It forced itself into my life and made itself my lucky number. If I look at the clock, it’s 3:18. If I get change back when I’m buying something, it’s $3.18. I see it on bar codes, on the TV, and when I happen to glance at the mileage on my car – or the word count on a document. It just shows up constantly and I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or if the number is trying to tell me something. The same thing happens to my dad with the number 911 – although that has obvious negative connotations.

I know this all sounds very superstitious. I’m not normally superstitious, but numbers have an odd significance to me. When I was younger, I would personify numbers. Three was fat and happy. Seven was like royalty because it stands up nice and straight. Four was organized and neat. And any three-digit number with ones as the first and last digits (121, 151, etc.) was very religious – I’m not sure why. I was a weird kid, what can I say? I was also into making up codes where A=1, B=2, all the way up to Z=26. It was a pretty cool amusement.

So… do you have any favorite numbers? Or numbers that show up all the time in your life?

  1. I’m not big on the meaning of numbers and I don’t know why, but I have always liked numbers. It’s structure to me and I function better with structure, but then, I’m a musician as well and numbers play a big roll in music.
I have seen 11:11 or 1:11 lately. I have no idea what that means! 🙂

  2. Sounds like the Universe had got you number. I guess you’re like an abacus. We can COUNT on you.

    Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

I’ve always seen numbers as having personalities. 5 has always been my favorite, it seems friendly, helpful. And 2. I like 2. But I guess this is because I’ve never been 2 good at math. Some numbers are just more helpful.

    I also like: 1ne, 2wo, 3hree, 4our, 5ive, 6ix, 7even, 8ight, 9ine, and pi.

    Fun post.

  3. 909 is significant to me & my husband, simply because it sounds like the “lala” part of a song we like. So we sing it whenever it’s 9:09 and we happen to notice.

4 is my favorite number, but I’ve never known why.

I used to somewhat obsessively make mathematical equations out of the time. Like, 11:24. 1 + 1 + 2 = 4. But sometimes it’s not always that easy.

I really like that you personified numbers. That’s just awesome. I personified my left hand and foot versus my right hand and foot. But I like the numbers thing better – more options.

    • I think I might try that thing with the time when I’m bored. Interesting… and personifying things always makes life more interesting!

  4. Wonderful post.
Especially enjoyed: Three is a good amount of cookies to eat.

My faves: 7 and 13 (which I saw on your list). And 713.
    Also 11:11 on digital clocks.

  5. 13. I always have something with the number as thirteen. say it’s my favourite number but not that significant. Now, after reading your post, i must say, 3 as fat and happy and 1 as religious can personify, as single/lone number.
