30 Day Book Challenge – Day 30

Well, I have completed the challenge. I know I haven’t done 30 consecutive days, but whatever. Who makes the rules for these things anyway?

So today’s prompt is: Your favorite book of all time

There are a few books I refer back to constantly and are always great sources of inspiration. Maybe my favorite book of all time is that encyclopedia of every dog breed known to man. I used to carry that book around constantly when I was in sixth grade and I wrote my name all over it, so that when I lost it, it actually was returned to me. Good memories. But that book was a reference book and it didn’t really speak to me.

I would say that the Bible and the Harry Potter series are my favorites, but they’re kind of cliche, even though they do speak to me and inspire me in countless ways. I know that whenever I have a problem, the Bible always has a solution – or I can read through the Psalms until I feel at peace. If I’m looking for something with an intricate world I can get lost in over and over, I will choose Harry Potter. It’s got tremendous re-read value.

Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style is a classic and one of my favorites. But is it my all-time favorite? Nah, I don’t think so. It’s a great reference book, but it doesn’t call out to me.

All the other candidates are books I’ve already mentioned in this challenge. But I shall choose this book:

A classic tale of good girl gone bad, Sanctuary is a more “accessible” Faulkner book – definitely not as hard to comprehend as The Sound and the Fury – and like many other books in this challenge, it’s changed the way I think about a lot of different things. I was so obsessed with it that I made a soundtrack for it. Maybe it means a lot to me because I live in the South. I don’t know. All I know is the book is awesome. 🙂

  1. I’ve enjoyed reading about your favorite books, Maggie.
Like you, I’m a big fan of Strunk and White ~ but I wouldn’t pick it as my favorite book.

    I’ve never read much Falkner.
    Maybe I’ll start with Sanctuary.

  2. This is a hard one to answer. I love so many books, but certainly, there are some I read over and over. All seven of Charles Williams’ novels.
    The Stand, by Stehpen King.
The Mind Parasites, by Colin Wilson (don’t let the title fool you, it’s amazing)
    Timegod, by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
The Light of Other Days, by Clarke and Baxter
    So many… oh, so many…
Oh, and yes, Harry Potter as well… )

  3. Well done on completing the challenge and really enjoyable to see what your influences are. That’s an impossible question to choose a favourite book! It’s like choosing a favourite song or film.

Will have to check out Falkner!

  4. I’m still working on my answer to this, but I do have to say one thing: I like Strunk & White (and the CMOS!) as well as anybody, but I would really be uneasy about anybody whose favorite book was a style manual.
