30 Day Book Challenge – Day 16

Today’s prompt: Favorite female character

Another very difficult choice, but I have to say Jenny Waynest from Barbara Hambly’s Winterlands series. I’ve probably talked about the series on this blog before, but it’s a fantasy series featuring dragons, magic, and a temptress holding a king within her clutches. Anyway, in the first book of the series, Dragonsbane, Jenny is a witch seeking to improve her powers, and when her lover John is about to slay the dragon Morkeleb, Jenny saves the dragon from an untimely death. Now that she has saved a dragon, her powers have increased tremendously. She can even turn into a dragon, and she does, but ends up wanting her humanity back.

The rest of the series involves Jenny’s developing magical powers and her loyalty to the dragon Morkeleb. Jenny does eventually reclaim her humanity in order to be with John, but newer conflicts arise. Both John and her son Ian are taken over by the demon queen and it’s up to Jenny to save them.

Jenny is an incredibly brave character who is willing to sacrifice anything, even her powers, for the people she loves.

  1. This reminds me of a few of my favorite female characters: Nanny McPhee . . . Mary Poppins . . . and the witch in Thomasina.

    thanks, Maggie!

  2. I couldn’t really pick just one. A top ten, maybe. Maybe I’ll do that on my blog.

I did enjoy Hambly’s Darwath books quite a bit, but never read more of her work. According to Wikipedia, she’s written about 4,275 books (or so), and that’s kind of intimidating.

    • The Winterlands series were the only books I read by her. Since she has so many other books, I probably ought to read a few more. At least one of them should be as good as the Winterlands!
