30 Day Book Challenge – Day 7

Today’s prompt: Most underrated book

Lewis Nordan’s Wolf Whistle is a historical literary novel focusing on Emmett Till, a black boy who was murdered in 1955 for whistling at a white woman. Nordan masterfully takes the events of a very real murder and turns them into something magical and powerful, even though the African-American Civil Rights Movement has long since ended.

Nordan brings the world of lower-class Mississippi to life with realistic and funny characters, rich symbolism, and a folksy tone. There are elements of magical realism throughout the novel, and it might seem odd to read about talking vultures, but those strange parts of the book only illuminate the reality of the characters and their situation.

To me, the book is a definite classic and should be known much more widely than it is.
