I’m finally revising the last book of my YA paranormal romance series, ONAN. Now that I’m at the end, I have come to two conclusions that will change the entire series.
1. Change my main character. In May, I am seriously considering writing another version of the series with a different main character and seeing how that turns out.
2. The first three books are just backstory. The really awesome stuff happens in ONAN. I’ve been seriously considering working on just ONAN, and inserting elements of the first three books as flashbacks.
I’ll keep playing with those ideas… maybe something interesting will come out of it. I’m only going into the second draft, so I still have a lot of room to change things and make it a better story. What’s surprising is that I’m not scared or angry that I might have to destroy weeks of work in order to get at the main story. As Faulkner said, murder your darlings (or something like that).
I’m also making good use of the Hollywood Formula, which is technically a resource for screenwriting. But many screenwriting resources and tips are good for novelists, too. I plotted out ONAN using the Hollywood Formula and surprisingly, the story fit into that mold pretty well. The Hollywood Formula makes it easy to see the beginning, middle, and end of the story, along with everything else that connects the three. I would highly recommend it to any first-time novelists/screenwriters. Very helpful!
