Every time I write a blog or post a tweet on Twitter, I think about the poem by Walt Whitman that begins:
A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself…
When we use blogs, Twitter, and other social media outlets, we’re just like that spider. We’re isolated in front of our computer and cell phone screens. We’re throwing filaments of ourselves out into the Internet and hoping that someone, somewhere reads them and relates to them. We’re hoping that those filaments “catch somewhere” so we can form connections, even though they may be tenuous, held together by just a string of comments or tweets online.
Just a thought for Monday… 🙂
