NaNoWriMo Post #21

I’ve finished NaNoWriMo with the roughest rough draft I’ve ever written (nothing revision won’t fix!) and a word count of 54,434.

For all those who are still struggling to get through, I’ll share the tool that’s helped me spit out about 75% of my novel:

Dr. Wicked’s Write or Die tool.

On the right side of the screen is the free online version – simply plug in your word count goal, the amount of time in which you want to accomplish that goal, the consequences, and the grace period, and fire away! (There’s also a desktop edition that you can purchase for $10, which is a good price for the features offered. Check it out!)

While you’re writing in the online version, you can only pause once, which is the biggest downfall of the program in my opinion, (what if you actually have a legitimate reason to be interrupted?) but it’s great if you really need that kick in the pants.

When you’re done with your goal, you can get cute little widgets to post on your blog:

Yay, widgets!

Try it out with a variety of different consequences and grace periods until you find the one that’s right for you. And good luck on finishing up with NaNo! I’m rooting for you! 😀

  1. I’ve used Write or Die before. I can’t do it consistently though, because when my dogs are awake (I have 5) I’m constantly interrupted. So I can only do it when they’re asleep, which isn’t often enough in my opinion!

    1. Same here. I have two dogs and it seems that every time I start using Write or Die, one of them has to go outside or starts chewing on something forbidden. So I just break the word count into small chunks and pray I won’t be interrupted. 🙂

      1. Yeah, I did that once. Got about 100 words in 2 minutes. That was pretty awesome, ’cause I always thought I typed kinda slow. Faster than longhand of course, but still…
