NaNoWriMo Post #16

Music helps me write. While I outline a novel, I go through and pick a song for each scene. Before I write the scene, I play the song and see if I can draw any inspiration from it.

I recommend this method to anyone, especially if you happen to be stuck in a hard part of your story. Base a scene off a song you’re into at the moment or one of your all-time favorite songs. Borrow events from music videos because (I know you’ve probably heard this before) all writers are professional thieves.

Some of my most inspiring songs at the moment:

“You’re a God” by Vertical Horizon

“Haunted” by Taylor Swift

“Girl Next Door” by Saving Jane

“Papercut” by Linkin Park (good fight scene song)

“Like a G6” by Far East Movement (the quick pace helps me write faster)

“All the Things She Said” by t.A.T.u.
(no matter how many times I listen to it, I never get sick of it)

And Journey. Anything by Journey.

Happy writing – and good luck on the final stretch of NaNoWriMo. Keep those words flowing!

  1. When the lights
    Go down
    On the City
And the sun shines on the bay
    How I want to be there . . .

    Enjoy the Journey with Journey!

Glad to see you’ve past the 40K mark. You should breeze into the finish line.

    • Yay! Someone who agrees with me! Thank you for taking the time to comment and I’ll definitely be looking at your post! 🙂

  2. For me, music is pretty much necessary in my writing process. Even though it sounds weird, I associate certain emotions with individual scenes and then i find a song that invokes thats emotion in me. I channel that emotion and I try to let it flow into my words.

Some sample songs that I use are:

    Iron and Wine- Trapeze Swinger
    Linkin Park- Hands Held High
The Weepies- The World Spins Madly on
    The Weepies- Gotta Have You
Boats and Birds- Gregory and the Hawk
    Stars- Dead Hearts
