NaNoWriMo Post #9

I’ve heard that Week 2 of NaNoWriMo is supposedly the worst. For me, the worst is Week 1 (thank God that’s over) because it’s hard for me to establish my plot and characters. Week 2 is usually where the action of the story picks up and things start to really move. I don’t become fully engaged with and attached to my characters until Week 2.

Here are two pieces of advice for anyone who’s got a bad case of the Week 2 doldrums (I’ve been dying to use that word!)…

1. Kill off a character

-Use the shovel of death
-Make it a mystery who killed your character. It’ll add suspense to your novel.
-Random animal attacks!
-A tragic accident happens at the character’s workplace.

2. Introduce a new character

-Get someone pregnant and make sure they give birth by the end of the novel.
-Introduce a character’s wacky relative
-Make a long-lost lover come back to town (then get someone pregnant, haha!)
-Create a character who’s a composite of your best friend and your worst enemy.

Got any other tips? Feel free to share! 🙂
